How TO MAINTIAN GOOD ORAL HYGIENE
Maintaining good oral hygiene is essential to preventing
tooth decay along with one’s overall general well-being.
Shocking statistics have shown that almost three-quarters of the UK are without their full set of natural teeth and 6% have no teeth. On the other hand, only 10% of UK adults are considered to have “excellent” oral hygiene, (according to reports on Dentaly.org).
With the stresses of daily life, one can often forget the
importance of maintaining their own oral hygiene. Here are some tips on how to
manage your own oral hygiene to its fullest:
1. Brush after eating
Brush your teeth at least 30 minutes after eating sugary foods, this allows
time for your saliva to naturally neutralise some of the acids produced by the
sugar.
2. Floss daily
Flossing helps to remove food debris and plaque from in-between your teeth where
a toothbrush is unable to reach effectively. This then reduces the risk of tooth
decay and potential gum problems. Waterflosser machines have proven to be a popular
alternative method to manual flossing.
3. Use mouthwash
This can help kill bacteria, strengthen enamel and maintain an overall
healthier oral environment.
4. Chew sugar-free gum
Saliva production can be stimulated which aids again in neutralising acids and
washing away food debris. Chewing gum
with xylitol, this is a sugar substitute that can help inhibit bacterial
growth.
5. Stay hydrated
Drinking water throughout the day helps rinse your mouth and dilute sugars and
acids which in turn reduces the impact on our teeth.
6. Rinse with water
After having consumed sugary foods, rinse your mouth with water to help wash
away any residual sugars and acids.
