How to replace a lost filling at home this Christmas

Complaints of a lost filling or suffering a broken tooth are the most common festive emergencies faced by dentists and effects are going to be even worse this year as short-notice dental appointments are hard to get. Thankfully, our Tooth-Fil packs provide everything you need to safely replace a lost filling at home with minimal effort and today we’re explaining how it works.

Traditionally, broken teeth at Christmas were often caused by chefs hiding a shiny silver coin in the pudding and this wasn’t just restricted to muggles, it seems wizards have the same tradition:

“Flaming Christmas puddings followed the turkey. Percy nearly broke his teeth on a silver sickle embedded in his slice.”

Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, J. K. Rowling

In ye olden times, a silver coin would easily have covered any resulting dental bills for tooth extraction. Unfortunately saving the tooth would be out of the question as home use dental kits weren’t available back then!

Typically, dentists treat lots of lost fillings in the run-up to Christmas as many of them get pulled out by the sticky sweets we eat (anyone else partial to toffees?). More traumatic problems tend to arise from Boxing Day onwards, it turns out that chipped crowns from opening beer bottles and teeth knocked out during a family punch-up over Monopoly are all routine for dentists at Christmas.

This year it’s much harder to see the dentist at short notice so relatively minor issues like lost fillings will be pushed way down the priority list to be dealt with in January so those of us with fillings need to act now and get prepared. If you’ve got fillings, don’t risk spoiling your turkey dinner, get yourself over to the nearest chemist and pick up a temporary filling material like Tooth-Fil just in case the worst should happen.

Tooth-Fil was designed specifically for at-home use so people can quickly replace a lost-filling and get on with their lives until a dental appointment becomes available. It’s easy to use, lasts up to 28 days and sets in minutes.

If you’ve lost a filling, here’s what you need to do:

1Gently clean the affected tooth

2Press Tooth-Fil paste into the gap using the spatula

3Gently bite down then release to get the paste in the correct position and allow saliva to cover the filling

4After one minute, rinse your mouth with warm water

5Avoid biting or applying pressure for at least 15 minutes while the Tooth-Fil hardens

That’s it! Tooth-Fil begins to harden when it encounters saliva and once it’s had 15 minutes to harden, you’re good to go for up to 28 days.

A dodgy tooth can make for miserable holidays at the best of times and right now we all need as much seasonal cheer as we can get. Rather than hoping for a Christmas miracle, remember that God helps those who help themselves and stock your first aid supply cupboard in advance!

Tooth-Fil and its big brother Tooth-Fil Plus are part of our Dr Denti home-use range. Everything in this range was designed to let laypeople treat their own minor injuries at home while they wait to see the dentist. Available from chemists and shops around the UK either individually or in a convenient First Aid Dental Kit, we’ve got you covered for everything from denture sores to a loose crown.

With all that said, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas with as few dental mishaps as possible! Take care, look after yourselves and we’ll be back again in 2021.Paragraph
